Seasoned producer and sound artist Baoerjin, whose long history of collaborations and compositions has made him one of Shanghai’s most prolific performers, puts his multi-disciplinary talents to use on his debut Ra ash, released with Trans MiB. Hitting that sweet spot between experimental exploration and open-bodied romanticism, the soundscapes spread out across the album are richly dense and pictorial, organic to the senses and full of imaginative zest. Baoerjin’s keen perception extends to how he brings in an assortment of musical mercenaries, from Aming to Zhang Meng, seamlessly adding to the expansive sonic wonders at hand. Exquisite.

The River, Orchestration, Walkman! 河边走 - Trio/河边走 即兴录音

Much like the music that improvisational outfit The River, Orchestration, Walkman! 河边走 revels in - the band seemingly emerged out of nowhere late last year with two releases - a vast ramshackle collection of jams that combine folk, free jazz, psych and experimental music immersing listeners into a vast world of sound that’s both familiar and exotic. Sharp yet loose clarinets notes, guitar strings that threaten to unravel at every turn and siren-like vocals that jump in with the growing droning underbelly - just another of the outfit’s many elements utilized to push a a song into new realms of mystery and engagement. At times unsettling, at times hypnotically alluring - The River, Orchestration, Walkman! creates music brimming alive with possibility.

otay:onii — Dream Hacker 夢之駭客

Zhejiang-born, Berklee-educated singer and producer Lane Shi, aka otay:onii, has been causing a stir in indie music circles here and abroad with her boundary-pushing industrial pop music, which some have described as “Industrial Bjork meets Chinese folk music.” On her latest, Dream Hacker, released with WV Sorcerer Productions, she hones in her noise and improv tendencies, instead focusing on a more “infectious ballad-oriented narrative”. Don’t be fooled, though: Shi, who cut her teeth with acts like Dent and Elizabeth Colour Wheel in the U.S., waves her freak flag proudly — canvassing across distorted and visceral electronic soundscapes and bilingual lyrics that showcase her unique vocal intonations and themes of self.
